Local marketing

Stop paying to reach the entire internet when your customers live within 5 miles

UK local businesses should market within their service radius first. A five-mile focus beats national SEO spend for trades, clinics, and shops serving nearby customers.

Pin your shop on a map. Draw a five-mile circle. Most of your profitable work probably already comes from inside that line, yet marketing spend often chases visibility nationwide.

If customers live within five miles, start there before you fund campaigns aimed at the whole internet.

The circle is a planning tool, not a prison. Expand it when vans, staff, and reviews support the wider radius profitably.

Print one estate inside the circle first. Prove response before you widen spend to the full five miles.

Repeat the same offer twice in the winning estate before you redesign artwork. Offer-market fit matters more than fresh design.

When an estate responds, ask your next customer there what almost stopped them calling. One sentence of feedback beats a design refresh.

The five-mile exercise

Print a map or use a digital radius tool. Mark estates, schools, offices, and competitors inside five miles. Count how many households that represents.

That is your realistic market, not the UK population.

Match spend to the circle

Leaflet drops, handouts, and van routes inside the radius cost less than competing for generic keywords across counties. Tighten Google Ads geo if you run them. Stop publishing location pages for towns you will not visit.

Every pound outside the circle is charity to someone else's customer.

List your last ten jobs on the map. If eight cluster inside three miles, treat that cluster as the bullseye for the next print test rather than chasing fringe towns that rarely convert.

Track response by distance

When calls come in, note postcode when polite. Compare QR scans from drops in north vs south of your patch. Double down where bookings cluster.

If scans are high five miles out but jobs concentrate within two, shrink the next drop.

Search still matters inside the radius

People within five miles will Google you after seeing your van or leaflet. Keep profile, reviews, and site accurate so confirmation is easy.

School-term timing matters. Drops near term start catch families settling into routines. Test one calendar event before you scale.
